Payment failures usually happen for a specific reason, and understanding these reasons can help you resolve the issue quickly. Below are the most common causes for Visa card declines and what you can do to fix them.
1. Insufficient Funds
Additionally, cards may also be frozen due to security concerns or multiple failed debit attempts.
If you see an error like "Insufficient balance", it means the amount you're trying to pay is higher than the funds available on your card or wallet.
Note that your card balance is separate from your general USD balance, and transferring money to your main account does not automatically fund your virtual card.
How to fix it:
Check your available balance.
Add money to your wallet.
Try the payment again.
Ensure the amount you add is between $2 and $2500.
2. Frozen Card
A frozen card cannot process transactions. When this happens, you may see an error such as "Card not available."
Cards may also be frozen due to security concerns or suspicious activity flagged on the card.
.
How to fix it:
Review your card status in the app.
Unfreeze the card.
Contact support if you need further help.
Log in to the Grey application or website (app.grey.co).
Navigate to the card management section.
Follow the prompts to unfreeze your card.
3. Terminated or Deleted Card
If a card has been deleted from your account, any payment attempt will fail with the message "Card not available."
Virtual cards may also be terminated if there are repeated failed transactions due to insufficient funds. Ensure your card is funded before making transactions.
How to fix it:
Check if the card still exists in your account.
If deleted, create a new Visa card.
4. Spending Limit Exceeded
When your transaction amount exceeds your card’s limit, the payment will be declined with an error such as “Amount exceeds card limit."
How to fix it:
Review your card's daily or transaction limits.
Increase the limit (if available).
Try a smaller amount.
5. Card Not Activated
If your card hasn't been activated yet, any transaction you attempt will fail. This often appears as "Card not available."
When your transaction amount exceeds your card’s limit, the payment will be declined with an error such as “Amount exceeds card limit."
How to fix it:
Complete the card activation process in your dashboard/app.
Try the transaction again after activation.
6. Not Supported Merchants
When you try to use the card on an unsupported platform. You can view the unsupported platforms here => Where You Can't Use Your Visa Card
Additionally, the Grey Visa card is 3DS-enabled and can be used on sites that require 3DS payments. If your card is not working on a specific platform, contact the merchant's support team to confirm the issue or consider deleting the card and applying for a new one. Please note that a card creation fee of $5 applies to create a new card.
7. Not Supported Region
Some merchants do not onboard cards issued in certain regions or countries. This includes Apple Pay, and you can learn more about this here => Countries and regions that support Apple Pay.
